Because I am clearly still procrastinating. :/

Think about fandom. What is it when you boil it down? It's a bunch of people who are slightly insane obsessing over their favorite books, movies, tv shows, video games, etc. And every fandom has their idols - the people somehow related to that book, movie, tv show, whatever which those slightly insane people obsess over in varying degrees. The most famous examples of these idols I can think of at the moment include Joss Whedon, Kristen Bell and Jensen Ackles/Jared Padalecki.

So we all know one of the major aspects of fandom is totally drooling over all the eye candy that we view on our screen. And usually, as the current [livejournal.com profile] picspammy challenge has taught us, this usually leads to declaring whoever we find the most drool-worthy our ~favorite person ever. So then there's this great flurry of information that starts to emerge about this person - pictures of appearances on the red carpet, YouTube videos of interviews, special features on DVDs and we build up in our minds this image of who this person is and the more we learn about them, the more ~~awesome they become. We fall in love over and over again with each new video, each new photoshoot that emerges.

So what happens if they turn out to be a dick?

When an actor or actress has become established and has an army of fangirls/boys, other, contradictory bits of information start coming to light. Some guy whose girlfriend works on the set of whatever show hunts down a message board for said show and says his girlfriend says our precious actor is an asshole. A fan feels brushed off during a visit to set and comes back to whine about on Livejournal, or some other mode of communication between fans. Personally, I've seen Jared Padalecki called "a douchebag" as well as Tom Welling and even known people to go as far as to say that the reason the Smallville DVDs haven't had gag reels since season three is because Tom takes himself too seriously and doesn't want his screw ups made public.

So, are these allegations true? I like to think that they're not, just because I love Tom and I love Jared and I like the idea I have in my head of them being ~~awesome. But then the question arises - does it really matter either way?

Think about it. The person we squee over isn't the actor as a human being who has their off days and, yes, their moments of bitchiness and is possibly something less than perfect. It's the perfect, nothing that isn't awesome version that we as a fandom have built up in our minds. And if they're not that person, ignorance is bliss and hopefully we will never know.

So, I guess my point is this: to the ass who's going to come into our little world here on the Internet and try and shatter it with the ~~truth, we don't want to hear it and we're not going to pay you any heed. And it doesn't really matter. So just let the fangirls be happy, in ignorance, if need be.

That was really well put. I conquer. I think a great example is the fan outrage at the idea of Christian Bale hitting his mother (I starkly denied it) but we really don't know anything...we just hope and create images...

Thanks. And yeah, that is a great example of this phenomenon, which didn't even cross my mind when I was typing this. When that stuff started coming out, there was a huge flurry of fangirls coming to his defense, but you never know. Although I think in this case, from what I've heard, we were right to do that. But maybe in another not so much.

SUCH a made of WIN post! I love it! It makes me sad when people say mean things about Tom. I love him. People who try to ruin fandom for others suck. *nods* :D

There's no reason why some sucky people should try and ruin our fun.

Bravo! :D Not everyone is a saint 24/7, so some accounts could be that they saw the 'having a bad day' side of the actor. I am curious as to what you read that led to this post.

I totally understand your ignorance is bliss stance. I'm sure most like that idea as well.
However, for me, personally I'd like to know if the actor/actress is worthy of my fangirl-ing. Because if they are a prick I don't want to be wasting my time on them, you know.

Thank you! Nothing that happened recently led me to this, but I remember being shook up a few months ago by people who said Tom was an ass and I finally thought - so what?

Yeah, I mean this all goes up to a point. I'm not saying we should stick behind somebody if they turn out to be a racist or a murderer or something, but for the little stuff I don't think it really matters.

Very true! And we won't stop loving them no matter what. Because at least for me, I do love them as people, and I realize that they're human.
Then again I've never heard anything bad about Eliza Dushku, my favorite person in the world. But if I did I'd prob cut a bitch lmao.
I get what you mean though. Like the Chad vs. Sophia wars out there. People bash the hell out of the other person cus they love their side and won't believe the trash talk. Heck, I do it. I deny anything bad about Sophia.

Because seriously, there's no way to know the real truth, so people should just shut up and enjoy.

I think that's a very important realization for us fangirls to come to, one that I don't think everyone has quite grasped.

I think it depends. Sometimes it ruins it for me, sometimes I ignore it, and sometimes I go oh well I still love you anyway.

Great post. Sometimes I feel like a bit of a split personality in relation to fandom. My brain knows that I don't know what my current obssession is really like and I never will and everything I think I know is pretty much based on things that I've made up in my head so who cares if someone says something that doesn't match my mental image which is completely made up anyway. On the other hand, I can totally do the squeee thing and get all bent out of shape when somebody says something mean about the pretty. Until, of course, I realize I'm being stupid and tell myself to get over it! *g*

And isn't that the whole point? That's the essence of fandom, and there's nothing to be ashamed of there!

thank you!

Ignorance probably is bliss. There are several actors who I used to like/love and have no interest in now because of their behavior. Russell Crowe springs to mind right away, Terrance Howard is another.

I'm torn about it because on the one hand, there's no requirement that you be a decent person to do your job and the job part is what I'm getting...and yes we're all human but on the other hand, I really would rather spend my money/time/energy/effort on someone who is not an ass or a bigot or what have you.

Well, if someone does something that is completely inappropriate or horrible that just can't be ignored, that's one thing. But if a couple people have less than wonderful experiences with someone who's generally thought to be a nice guy, that's different. What I was getting at here is those people who go out of their way to try and destroy our picture of a person when there isn't any real evidence.

Very well put.

And I've found it works the other way around as well. I was never big on a certain character (who will go unnamed) but the actor? She's one of the nicest I've met thus far and has spurred me on to like the character much, much more. :)

thank you.

I never thought about it that way, but you could very well be true. I know that a lot of people who hate Lana think Kristin's adorable, but I think a lot of the time when you don't like a character it's because of the writing, not the actor. Unless they actor isn't any good, which is not the case with anyone on Smallville.
